STATE WATER CONTRACTORS ASKS COURT TO INVALIDATE FEDERAL REGULATIONS THAT LIMIT WATER SUPPLY FOR PEOPLE, FARMS AND BUSINESSES
The State Water Contractors (SWC) filed a lawsuit today against federal agencies challenging regulations that further limit the amount of water that can be pumped through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta). The regulations, outlined in a biological opinion for Chinook salmon, steelhead and green sturgeon, failed to take into account the many other factors contributing to the fish population decline, such as changing ocean conditions.

STATEMENT FROM LAURA KING MOON, ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER OF THE STATE WATER CONTRACTORS, IN RESPONSE TO SWP ALLOCATIONS
Sacramento, CA –
“We’re grateful to see the small increase in water supply allocations, but continue to caution Californians that this is still a grim projection for 2009. We are still facing potentially record-low water deliveries because of ongoing draconian regulatory restrictions. Until we overhaul the state’s water delivery system, our water supply will be severely limited by environmental restrictions and court-ordered cutbacks.”

STATE WATER PROJECT DELIVERY PROJECTIONS INCREASE FIVE PERCENT
Picture Remains Grim Due to Cumulative Impacts of Drought & Regulatory Restrictions
Sacramento, CA –
The State Water Contractors welcomed the California Department of Water Resources’ announcement that State Water Project (SWP) delivery projections have increased from 15 percent to 20 percent, but the organization says that the overall picture remains unchanged. The state continues to face a three-year drought and a deep and growing water crisis. The cumulative impacts of drought and ongoing regulatory restrictions have
led to water rationing, fallowed farm lands, job losses and water rate increases throughout the state.

We welcome the Governor’s focus on the state’s water crisis and look forward to working with the administration towards rapid implementation of a long-term solution. We need to be able to use every drop of rain when it falls for both people and fish, and that requires a new water delivery system. We need to do it as soon as possible.”

CALIFORNIA’S WATER SUPPLY DRIES UP
Snowpack Levels at 61% of Average; State Water Contractors Urge Long-Term Delta Fix Along With Conservation
Sacramento, CA –
The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) released its latest snow survey results today showing Sierra Nevada snowpack levels at just 61 percent of normal, giving public water agencies a dismal outlook on weather conditions. The State Water Contractors member agencies rely heavily on snowpack runoff from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to supply water to millions of Californians and 750,000 acres of agricultural land. Today’s snow survey reinforces that light rain and snow will not make up for California’s severe dry conditions.

Early Estimates Indicate Agencies May Get Only 15% of Water Contracted
Sacramento, CA –
The bleak water supply forecast for 2009 reinforces the pressing need to build a new water delivery system that will protect the environment and provide a reliable water supply for Californians. Water agencies receiving water from the State Water Project (SWP), one of the state’s primary water delivery systems, may only get 15 percent of their contract water supplies in 2009, according to early forecasts released today by the California Department of Water Resources.
