Precipitation Eases Drought Worries, Long-Term Challenges Remain
Tuesday, 29 March 2011
Sacramento, CA—“Our organization is pleased that California’s long-standing drought has come to an end. This year’s abundance of precipitation, and the resulting near-term boost in water supply, has improved conditions for our water agencies, which have struggled during the past few years to meet water supply demands.
“Precipitation comes and goes, however. As we acknowledge the end of this drought, it is essential that we address the critical water infrastructure challenges that continue to put California’s water future in jeopardy, regardless of how much or how little rain and snow we get. Despite the fact that snowpack is 165 percent of normal, our water supply allocations are still only at 70 percent due to environmental regulations and operational challenges with the State Water Project. It is more important now than ever that we continue our work to stabilize our ailing water infrastructure, and ensure long-term water supply reliability for all Californians. To that end, the State Water Contractors looks forward to continuing its active participation in the Bay Delta Conservation Plan in order to develop much-needed tangible solutions.”
